On siinä heillä lukemista.

More Biofuel? I don't think so

Article from www.time.com about biofuels.

"Meanwhile, by diverting grain and oilseed crops from dinner plates to fuel tanks, biofuels are jacking up world food prices and endangering the hungry. The grain it takes to fill an SUV tank with ethanol could feed a person for a year."

Hell, even the term biofuel is so new that that the dictionary of blogger.com doesn't recognize it and yet our industry is making it the savior of global warming.

Just got back from Norway skiing and didn't really want finish reading this article but there's no use turning your head and ignoring this kind of news...

It's easy for us Finns to turn our heads the other way since no one is chopping down our backyards. We're cutting our forests but in a way that it always grows back. The biodiversity isn't doing that well because of the industrialized "paper"forests but at least there isn't any major deforestation.

So let's just keep on whipping our asses with that triple coated extra soft toilet paper. Since that's where most of our brains seem to be.

Keep on driving the fast lane bro!

Does your boss respect you?

You know what bothers me a bit. When you ask for a job certificate from your employer they reply: “You can write it yourself and we'll just sign it afterwards.” I know I should take that as an ultimate compliment. I've done my job so well that they even let me write my own job certificate (or what ever it's called in English). Great!

But that's not how I see it. To me it just tells that “You were a good guy. But I don't consider you that highly that I would spend 15 minutes of my personal time writing you a document.”

If someone does that to me after many years of working in the company I will say "F### you!" Just so that you know.

Anyways, I'm of to Norway. One week of skiing and having fun with my friends. I'll be back!

"Change, shit. I guess change is good for any of us" (2Pac)

Change happens way too slowly in our societies. Why is that? My guess is that all the innovative people are hired by commercial instances. Important people didn't get to be big bosses because they are smarter than the rest of us. They got to that position by having a vision of the future. The further you can see the bigger boss your going to be.

Imagine if these people were working in parliaments and nonprofitable organizations? I bet they would still have the same ability to see to the future. They would realize that oil is going to run out, nuclear isn't the solution, wars are bad for the country (in most cases), renewable energies are the future etc. and they would do something about it way sooner than "regular" people. Instead now people in charge of our countries are ex-celebrities, miss universe candidates and old sports figures. At least in Finland. (Well not entirely but still...)

How an earth are these people capable of making big decisions when needed when they've spent most of their lives in the gym watching THEIR waists or running around the forest because THEY want to be the best at Nordic skiing.

Change happens slowly because most of us are just like these politicians. Politicians think forward 4 years because of this thing called election. That's their Olympics or beauty competition. They don't care if food runs out in 9 years. Before that they have to be elected two more times and by telling people they have to start acting responsible NOW isn't going to help them get reelected. Selfishness is a bitch.

I'm sorry but our society wont change until we change these people to persons who posses a vision of the future. A vision of future other than firm tits or nice biceps! And the same goes for the citizens!

(I really like the idea of democracy but it's no good if the people don't act accordingly. If Finland is suppose to be the role model of this "movement" then this planet is doomed.)

They say I'm smart

I took an IQ test today. It's quite precise I think. I mean I've done few in my life and they all give the same result. This one told me my result was "top rate". My point average (131) was higher than 98% of the people.

This post isn't going to be about me bragging how smart I am. Although I have to say that it doesn't really make me feel bad to see the result... Anyways... Am I really smart? I don't feel any smarter than my friends even though I probably am (Finnish humor) :p

What does it mean to be smart in an IQ-test? Am I really smart or am I just good doing IQ-tests? I really don't know. I said I don't feel smarter than the rest and I stand by that statement. I'd say I feel more aware of things than many of my friends. I think about stuff a lot and I'm aware of things that are happening around me. I hate talking just about stuff that is meaningless. In school I feel frustrated if I'm not learning something. At home I can't just lay on my sofa and do nothing.

So I would never say that I'm smarter than 98% of people. I'd say I'm more active than 98% of people (that's an overstatement as well). Hell! I might even be more stupid than 98% of people by doing something all the time. Maybe everyone else are enjoying their lives thus making them smarter.. What the hell is this ´smart person´ made of?

I don't know. I'm not smart. I just want to become smart with myself.

Interested of the IQ-test? It takes about 40 minutes. Dare you find out if your smart or not?
IQ-test (in Finnish)

( I just finished my thesis for school and I can honestly say that now I feel smarter. I don't mean education wise. Now I'm able to use my brains again after 3 months of boring work. Writing feels natural again and it feels like I can finally relax.)

Internet is freedom?

It's funny how people think Internet is the ultimate weapon for freedom of speech. You can write anything you want and everybody can read it.

I just don't see it that way entirely. Everybody can't get to Internet and everybody can't write what ever they feel like. I can but not everyone.

First. Internet is not free. I pay 10 euros a month from this connection to the world. So there is a price for my freedom of speech. Everybody in the world can't afford that.

Certain authorities can block entire servers if they have some illegal content inside of them. Think of child porn for example. Some server is 99.9% full of legal stuff but it's closed because it has illegal content. Who is responsible of this data. The owner of the server? I don't like the idea that it's this fault. That would mean he has to control everything that goes in to his server. There it is again the scary word 'control'.

So how free is Internet if police can block sites in some countries (China, Thailand, Finland) ban use of certain search terms and entire sites or even the whole Internet connection(Burma)?

Freedom is a system/idea that nobody controls. Well at least to me.

Taxing vegetables

I started wondering why are the vegetable plates in restaurants about the same price as meat plates. Or for that matter price per kilo for many vegetables is almost the same as the cheapest meat.. How is that?

So my suggestion is that meat should have higher taxes than vegetables. To me that would be just logical. I mean meat requires many times more energy compared to all the green stuff that pops out of the fields (meat eats, it has to be killed, stored, chopped in to pieces, packed). So how come it doesn't show on the prices?? Somebody is manipulating the system and I don't like it.

Food is getting more expensive by the week and to me it's not fair to punish those who are trying to change the system by making it more sustainable. Instead they should be awarded (tax cuts for green stuff) so that more people would join them.

Ok Ok, I'm a vegetarian these days but that doesn't mean I want these tax cuts so that I could save money. I still buy Spanish tomatoes because they are cheaper even though it's not the ecological thing to do.. But the day I start earning some real money, instead of living from social security, I promise to start buying local products.

I only wish they would invent a banana tree that stands the cold winters of Scandinavia. Well not exactly. Gene manipulation is not really my thing either...

Best job interview ever

There were 8 of us and 'Speed interview' was the theme of the night. 9 bosses, 5 minutes each. Everyone asked a bit different things. It's been a long day and I missed my train back to East because of the job interview but it was totally worth it. I'm saying that before I even know if I got the job... That should tell something.

The job is something that really interests me. I know I'd be good for the job but let's see what they think. One thing is for sure... It beats my last job interview 100-to-1 (cheers PHS for showing what a crap interview is all about). This time I actually got to talk with every owner. That tells a lot about the company. It shows they care who they hire.

And hey! It's not everyday you get to drink beer and drinks with the owners after the interview. It's a strange world we're living in and every once in a while I love it.

EDIT: It was also the longest interview I've been to. At 4 p.m I entered the bar and after 10 p.m I left the place behind me to dive into the dark night of Helsinki. (Well ok, the interview lasted only an hour and after that it wasn't that formal anymore.)

Oh, I also made a funny joke to few girl about one of the co-founders of the company and he was standing right next to me. I mean that's something that isn't going to happen in the near future I'm sure of that! I don't know if I stepped over some line with the joke but I just had to say it. The owner didn't really know how to react to what I said. If you are reading this post: I'm sorry. Maybe a bit too much too soon. I'm an observer and react to things when they happen and then think. That's what humor is all about.

I often have this problem that I'm too friendly too soon. Finns don't always like it. I just have to hope they liked it because... well that's just me.

I'm back! (Zakopane)

This phrase is loosing it's strength. Anyway Polish skiing is over for now. Great times but for now I'd say this was my last visit to Zakopane. Lots of good memories from that place from the past 3 years: My best off-piste skiing, many new friends, Hell-of-a-good-time...

I'll miss you Zakopane.....Not! Well maybe little.

Still to come, in the near future, some posts with something worth reading.. or maybe not in the near future. My brain is quite empty.

One week in Zakopane

...and one week still to go..

What a week it's been.. Hardly any snow. It's been really warm and cloudy and sunny and I've seen all kinds of weather but no snow. Spring came early this year and I've been skiing only 3 days in one week.

But the thing is it doesn't really matter. This week was "amazing" like one friend kept repeating all the time. I made some new friends who are really nice people and I guess that's what counts. The buses just left Zakopane and now I'm all alone in this hotel. One day for resting and tomorrow another 100 Finns arrive full of energy.

I'm really tired. One week of partying and laughing takes it's toll but it's been worth it. Definitely! I'm just hoping that next week there will be some snow since I really don't want to drink beer 2 weeks in a row. I feel my liver agrees with that opinion.

Today is reserved for school projects but I think my brain is so tired and relaxed and empty of thoughts that few movies from my laptop might be a better idea. I don't really care about school right now.

As you can read I don't have anything special to say. This is what HUPELLUS and amazing vacation does to your brains. It reboots them. It's not totally a positive thing but new friends really make up for it!
